Pedagogical Principles

Teaching, learning and pedagogical principles

At Someries Infant School and Early Childhood Education Centre, our teaching and learning are underpinned by a clear and consistent pedagogical approach. Every decision we make is rooted in the belief that every child deserves an ambitious, engaging and inclusive education that enables them to flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

Our pedagogical principles articulate the shared beliefs, values and practices that shape teaching across our school. They provide a common language for staff, ensure consistency for pupils and families, and support our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement.

Although our Early Childhood Education Centre and Key Stage One have distinct pedagogical approaches that reflect children’s different stages of development, both are united by the same commitment to placing the child at the heart of everything we do.

Early Childhood Education

The first years of education lay the foundations for future success. Our Early Childhood Education pedagogical principles reflect our belief that children learn best through secure relationships, purposeful play, carefully planned adult interactions and environments that inspire curiosity, exploration and independence.

Our approach combines high-quality adult-led teaching with rich opportunities for child-initiated learning. Learning is carefully tailored to each child’s developmental stage and individual needs, building on prior experiences through repetition, consolidation and meaningful connections that enable knowledge and skills to become secure.

These principles also demonstrate the importance we place on observation, assessment, partnerships with families, and the creation of carefully designed learning environments that nurture every aspect of children’s development.

Our Early Childhood Education teaching, learning and pedagogical principles summarise the approaches that ensure every child gets the very best start to their educational journey.

Key Stage One Education

As pupils move into Key Stage One, our pedagogy builds upon the strong foundations established in the early years while introducing increasingly structured learning experiences that develop independence, resilience and academic excellence.

Our approach is characterised by explicit modelling, responsive teaching, carefully sequenced curriculum planning and high expectations for every pupil. Teachers continually adapt learning in response to formative assessment, ensuring that misconceptions are addressed quickly and that every child is supported and challenged to achieve their full potential.

A strong emphasis on language development, pupil participation, effective feedback and Targeted Academic Support ensures that learning is purposeful, engaging and accessible for all. Through collaborative professional reflection and our case sampling approach, we continually refine our teaching to secure the very best outcomes for our pupils.

Our Key Stage One teaching, learning and pedagogical principles demonstrate how we build on children’s early experiences to provide an ambitious, knowledge-rich curriculum that prepares every pupil for the next stage of their education.

A shared commitment

While our approaches evolve as children progress through the school, the principles that underpin them remain constant. We place the child at the centre of every decision, building strong, trusting relationships that enable every pupil to feel safe, valued and ready to learn. We maintain the highest expectations for all pupils, delivering ambitious, carefully sequenced learning that is responsive to individual needs. Through engaging experiences, explicit teaching and carefully planned opportunities for exploration and independence, we nurture curiosity, resilience and a lifelong love of learning. At the same time, we are committed to continually reflecting on and refining our practice, ensuring that every child benefits from the highest quality education.

Together, these principles provide a clear expression of what teaching and learning look like at Someries Infant School and Early Childhood Education Centre, ensuring that every pupil experiences a coherent, ambitious and high-quality educational journey from the very beginning of their time with us.
