Our Head of English is E Blackett

English has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. A high-quality education in English will teach children to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. Through reading in particular, children have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development. Reading also enables pupils both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society.

Reading

Reading is taught every day at Someries Infant School and Early Childhood Education Centre.

In addition to a daily phonics lesson, all children receive a regular reading lesson in which they are taught the skills to read and understand what they are reading. Children also engage in regular ‘Once Upon a Time’ sessions’ and peer reading sessions to develop their reading fluency.

Grammar, punctuation and spelling

All pupils in key stage one receive regular grammar and punctuation lessons in which discrete skills are taught which can later be applied throughout our cross-curricular writing lessons.

Spelling at Someries Infant School and Early Childhood Education is taught during our daily phonics lessons. All children have access to high-quality dictionaries and thesauruses to enable them to improve their spelling and vocabulary choices within writing lessons.

Writing

Writing at Someries Infant School and Early Childhood Education Centre is taught in a cross-curricular way. Pupils’ writing outcomes often reflect and incorporate the learning which has taken place throughout our Prime Learning Challenge curriculum.
