Enrichment

At Someries Infant School and Early Childhood Education Centre, we believe that exceptional learning extends beyond the classroom. Our carefully planned programme of enrichment opportunities enhances our world-class curriculum by providing memorable, real-life experiences that inspire curiosity, deepen understanding and bring learning to life.

Every enrichment opportunity is closely aligned with our Prime Learning Challenge Curriculum, ensuring that pupils can make meaningful connections between their classroom learning and the wider world. These experiences provide purposeful contexts in which children can apply and extend the rich vocabulary they have been taught, develop new skills and build lasting knowledge.

Throughout their journey at Someries, pupils benefit from a carefully sequenced programme of enriching visits and workshops. Our Nursery pupils enjoy a visit from a farm, providing first-hand experiences of animals and life on the farm. Every year, all pupils in Reception and Key Stage One visit ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, where they deepen their understanding of wildlife, habitats and conservation. Year One pupils visit the British Schools Museum, enabling them to compare schooling past and present, while Year Two pupils visit Mountfitchet Castle and the Norman Village of 1066 to immerse themselves in history and develop a deeper understanding of life in Norman England.

Our pupils also benefit from regular visits by a specialist animal expert, who brings a variety of animals into school to provide engaging, hands-on learning experiences. These sessions enrich our Prime Learning Challenge Curriculum by enabling pupils to develop a deeper understanding of the natural world through direct interaction with animals.

A wide range of drama workshops further enhance the curriculum by bringing significant historical events, influential individuals and high-quality texts vividly to life. Pupils participate in immersive experiences linked to learning about events such as the Great Fire of London and the life and work of Florence Nightingale, as well as literary texts including ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. These experiences deepen pupils’ understanding, strengthen their communication skills and encourage creativity and imagination.

Dance workshops also form an important part of our enrichment programme, broadening pupils’ cultural understanding through engaging experiences such as Brazilian carnival dance workshops. These opportunities develop confidence, coordination and appreciation of different cultures while supporting learning across the curriculum.

Our Religion and World Views Curriculum is enriched through focused visits and workshops led by local faith leaders, providing pupils with authentic opportunities to learn about a range of religious and non-religious world views. Meeting representatives from different faith communities encourages respectful discussion, promotes understanding and helps pupils appreciate the diversity of the society in which they live.

Alongside these curriculum-linked experiences, all pupils receive age-appropriate training in basic first aid, including how to respond if someone is choking. This practical learning equips children with valuable life skills, helping them to develop confidence, responsibility and an understanding of how they can help keep themselves and others safe.

At Someries Infant School and Early Childhood Education Centre, enrichment is not an addition to the curriculum – it is an integral part of it. By making learning immersive, meaningful and experience-driven, we ensure that every child develops the knowledge, skills and cultural capital needed to thrive.
